In 1996, two brothers with limited knowledge and experience in the merchant bankcard industry but full of passion and vision created a small independent sales organization. Today, the company that Matt and Edward Freedman started, Colorado-based Total Merchant Services (TMS), has more than 200 employees and 1,500 sales partners. This past year, TMS completed the largest acquisition in its history. It doubled the number of active, income-producing merchants to more than 80,000 and increased the number of new accounts activated each month to more than 4,000. In addition, it processed more than $6 billion in transactions last year and pays more than $1 million in commissions every month.
The company’s business philosophy is modeled after a quote from motivational speaker Zig Ziglar, who said that if you help enough people get what they want, you will get everything you want. “That tenet has been the touchstone to all our success,” says Edward Freedman, president and CEO of TMS and secretary of ETA’s board. “When I first started out on the streets selling merchant accounts as an MLS, I approached every prospect with that motto. My focus was all about how they could successfully run their business. My recommendations were based on their success, not mine.”
