When Michael Segura launched the aptly named Group ISO in 2001, he didn’t look to industry veterans for inspiration; he looked to James Cash Penney, the man who transformed a handful of Colorado-based clothing stores into the coast-to-coast chain of department stores we know today as JCPenney.
“Penney got his company to grow by making each person who managed a JCPenney a partner; I thought that would be a great fit for this industry,” explains Segura, who began his career in the late 1990s as an entry-level salesperson at Amcore Marketing/Bankcard Systems, a check approval and guarantee company in Rohnert Park, California.
“I had gone on more than 20 interviews before meeting with Dave and Jerry who worked for Paul Green [former CEO of Amcore and current president and CEO of The Green Sheet Inc.], and he was the only one who would hire me on straight commission,” Segura recalls. “That was challenging, especially when you’re new to sales.”
