White House ID Theft Task Force Reports |
|
|
|
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Federal Trade Commission Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras announced the completion and release of the President’s Identity Theft Task Force strategic plan in a joint press release issued on Monday, April 23, 2007.
While much of the plan focuses on public sector handling of personal information, the plan includes several of the recommendations suggested by ETA during the notice and comment period (ETA’s Submission to the President’s Identity Theft Task Force).
Specifically, the report includes a recommendation that Congress
establish a new legal framework for data security that includes: (1)
establishment of a national standard for data security/breach
notification; (2) creation of a risk-based standard for notification;
(3) preemption of inconsistent state data security laws; and (4)
recognition of the existing Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) legal
framework.
The strategic plan is the result of an unprecedented federal effort to
formulate a comprehensive and fully coordinated plan to attack this
widespread and destructive crime. According to the press release, “the
plan focuses on ways to improve the effectiveness of criminal
prosecutions of identity theft; enhance data protection for sensitive
consumer information.”
