Las Vegas is known as a “24-hour” city – food and beverages (including alcohol) are available at all hours of the day, every day. Casinos are also open 24 hours a day. Most retail shops are open from 10am-9pm daily. “The Strip” (Las Vegas Boulevard) is where most hotels and casinos are located, but Fremont Street, Downtown (about a 10 minute drive north of The Strip) is also a popular destination for who want to experience “old Vegas”.CURRENCY
American Express, Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted, as are debit cards. There are many ATMs available in the city. Most charge a fee, with ATMs in casinos charging a premium for convenience. Please let your bank know you will be traveling so they do not block access to your account(s). Typically, ATM’s provide the best exchange rate of the day with the least amount of commission per transaction. There are a few currency traders in Las Vegas, but your best solution is to use ATMs for cash.DINING
Many different cuisines are available in Las Vegas, both on and off of The Strip at many different price points. We suggest making dinner reservations as many popular restaurants get booked up during TRANSACT. Feel free to ask the TRANSACT team if you need suggestions! Please note that most restaurants will cancel reservations as “no shows” if you are more than 10 or 15 minutes late.

The legal age for buying and consuming alcoholic beverages is 21. Proof of age (a government-issued photo ID card, such as your passport) is required when you purchase alcohol at stores or restaurants. Most nightclubs in Las Vegas also require proof of age for entry, even if you look over 21.

The United States uses 110-120 volts AC (60 cycles), compared with 220-240 volts AC (50 cycles) used in most countries in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. If your small electrical appliances use 220-240 volts, you will need a 110-volt transformer and a plug adapter with two flat parallel pins to operate them in the US. Converters are difficult to find in the United States, so it is recommended that you bring one with you if you anticipate that you will need one.

All embassies are located in Washington, DC. International visitors can obtain telephone numbers for their embassies and consulates by calling “Information” in Washington, DC, at +1 202.555.1212.

Dial 911 in case of an emergency. If you become ill during your visit, please alert a member of the TRANSACT staff. If there is a medical emergency, dial 911 from any phone. ETA cannot cover the cost of medical expenses, so please consider travel insurance options available to you before traveling to the United States. TRANSACT, ETA and the official conference venues have extensive emergency procedures in place.

If you are stopped by the police for a minor infraction of the law (such as a traffic violation), never attempt to pay the fine directly to a police officer. All fines must be paid to the clerk of the court. If you are accused of a more serious offense, it is wise to say and do nothing before consulting a lawyer. Call your embassy or consulate immediately for assistance.

Please take the precautions you would take travelling to any large city. Avoid deserted areas such as dark streets or empty city parks at night. Avoid carrying valuables with you on the street — especially large amounts of cash — and keep expensive cameras or electronic equipment in your bag or covered when not in use.

  • SAFETY (continued)
The Mandalay Bay, Delano, Luxor and New York New York hotels offers locking safes in all guest rooms. It is recommended that you use these to lock valuables when you are not in your room. ETA cannot guarantee protection of your personal property, but will make every effort to help you secure your items.

Las Vegas has many places to shop, regardless of budget. There are two large outside outlet malls, one south of The Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard), and one north. Nearby regular shopping malls include Towne Square and Fashion Show Mall. There are also shops in all of the casinos on The Strip. Mandalay Bay features more shops (and restaurants) in Mandalay Place, a bridge between The Delano and Luxor hotels. Most retail shops are open from 10am-9pm daily.

In the US, smoking laws vary by city. In many locations, smoking is prohibited in indoor public places, including all restaurants and their attached bars, theaters, educational facilities, auditoriums, and public transportation as well as within 25-50 feet of public entrance. If you smoke, take care to ensure that you are in an area where it is permissible to do so. Tobacco products may not be sold to anyone under 18 years of age. TRANSACT is a smoke-free environment, including e-cigarettes and smoking areas are not designated at official functions or venues.

In the United States, there is no a VAT (value-added tax) or other indirect tax. Hotels add additional taxes, as do most restaurants and stores. Sales taxes are not included in sticker prices; they are added on to your bill at the checkout counter. Taxes are added to restaurant bills at the time the bill is presented.

Costs, especially for long-distance service and operator-assisted calls, can vary widely. Generally, hotel surcharges on all calls are extremely high. If you are attending a conference at a hotel site, a phone will be available in your guest room.

We highly suggest you purchase an international data / phone plan in advance with your mobile carrier to save money on cell phone usage in the United States. Mandalay Bay provides free WiFi for attendees in public spaces for those staying at the hotel. Other hotels may have free Wi-Fi in public spaces.

Because most phones in the US are carrier-locked, finding SIM cards may be a challenge.

Outside of official TRANSACT functions, it is customary to tip bartenders, waiters, and cab drivers between 15% and 20% dependent on quality of service. When paying a restaurant bill, make sure the tip has not already been included (it will appear as a “service charge” or “gratuity” on the receipt). Tips are not expected in facilities or functions officially associated with TRANSACT.

The continental United States has four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. Las Vegas is located in the Pacific time zone.

Las Vegas has buses, plentiful taxis, Uber and Lift. You may even take Uber and Lift from McCarran airport! There are designated areas for Uber and Lift pick up/drop offs there. If you take a taxi, they should accept credit cards, but may charge a slight fee for usage.

If you are staying at any of the official TRANSACT hotels, under no circumstances should the taxis take you from the airport to the hotel by freeway. The hotels are less than 10 minutes from the airport. If your taxi driver insists on taking the freeway to your hotel, please take down their taxi number and company, and the TRANSACT will help you report them to the authorities.

    Please see the information below.
