Welcome to The ETA University Encyclopedia of Terminology for the Acquiring Industry

This encyclopedia is a digital version of the printed encyclopedia published by the Electronic Transactions Association, for use of ETA members and others who are interested the electronic payments industry and would like to be familiar with its common terms and definitions.

This publication is intended to consolidate the numerous acronyms and terminology used in the electronic payment transactions industry. The terms cover all aspects of the payment industry including payment instruments such as checks, debit, credit and prepaid cards; industry rules and regulations; related government rules and regulations; specific operations terminology; technology; general business terms; and sales and marketing terms.

We've built the digital encyclopedia using wiki software. If you have never used a wiki before the concept is simple. If you create an account and log into the wiki, you can edit or add information to these pages, subject to the terms and conditions we have established for the encyclopedia. While we have made every effort to check and double-check the contents of the encyclopedia, having the electronic payments community act as the ultimate authors and editors will make it a better, more authoritative, information source now and make it a dynamic document that grows and changes as the industry evolves.
